Dal is one of my favourite comfort foods and this chickpea curry leaf dal is ready in 20 minutes! The curry leaf adds a really delicious aromatic flavour to the dish which isn’t really like anything else, however I know sometimes curry leaf is a bit tricky to find… So if you’re unable to source it, this dish is equally delicious without the curry leaf.

Onion: brown, red or shallots will all work here.
Garlic: add as much as you want!
Ginger: grated or finely chopped will both work here.
Spices: provides the main flavour for the dal!
Curry leaves: I love the flavour of curry leaves, but if you don’t want to add them (or can’t find them, sometimes they’re tricky to source) then it can be omitted.
Chickpeas: for a quick and easy dish I’ve used canned chickpeas here.
This is great served with some naan bread and steamed greens!
In a large frying pan over a medium heat, add 1-2 tbsp of oil. Once hot, add the sliced onion. Cook until softened, about 5-10 minutes. Stir regularly.
Add the garlic, ginger, spices and curry leaves. Cook for two minutes. Stir often.
Add the chickpeas and 250ml water. Simmer for 5 minutes. Blend (or mash) about half of the chickpeas, then stir to combine.Top with coriander and yoghurt, and that’s everything!
What’s the best way to store this dish?
Place in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Then reheat either in the microwave, in the oven, or on the hob.
Can this be frozen?
Yes! Just place in an airtight container and defrost in the fridge overnight or in the microwave.
